It was about 50 years ago, in the mid-1960s, that the dean at what is now the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee decided that he had too many direct reports and that there was too much money being spent on administration in the College. His answer was to take two of the College’s academic departments and combine them into a single department. Thus, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Marketing joined together to become the Department of Marketing and Transportation. In the ensuing 50 years, the name of the department morphed into Marketing, Logistics, and Transportation, then again to Marketing and Logistics, and finally to Marketing and Supply Chain Management, which is what we call ourselves ...
