Researching Corporate News

While databases are most helpful in providing numerical or quantitative data, qualitative data is often needed, such as an expert's opinion or forecasts for future industry trends. This type of qualitative information is likely to arise in news reports and industry articles. Thus it's worth considering using an article database.

Note that several article index databases exist to help find corporate news or other relevant analysis on a topic. Some article index databases have also expanded to provide company information (see Exhibit 4-19). Also, other types of databases, such as LexisNexis, can outperform article index databases in specialized areas.

Access leading business publications, such as the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times using the article index database ABI/Inform Global. This database indexes various international professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines, with full-text access to about 3,000 of them. See Exhibit 4-20 for the advanced search screen. To search for articles on a particular company, use the advanced search screen, then select “Company/Org” from the drop-down menu.
