Monitoring

Monitoring, often called ‘foldback’, is what we use to enable the artists to hear what they need to when on the stage so that they can perform correctly and in time with other artists or any sound or music being played such as backing tracks. The PA system may be a fair distance away from them and what they hear from this will be mainly reflections from the opposite wall, which will have a delay due to the sound traveling there and back. This is not a good source of reference, so artists have a more direct way of hearing the sound using speakers on the stage facing them or in-ear monitors similar to the type used with personal stereos.
