4.33.1 Background

This section addresses selected topics in speech signal processing. Speech is arguably the most natural and effective means of human communication. We are all familiar with the use of speech, both in face-to-face conversations and in telephony. The usefulness of speech to humans is clear and therefore devices and services that employ speech in some form or another are always going to be important in society in general as well as in business and commerce.
