The practice of abstracting: structure, processes and language

Theory and practice go hand in hand to the point that they are almost inseparable. This means that what follows cannot be considered as purely practical – there is always a theoretical background. Nevertheless, those who are more interested in practical issues will find themselves at home here.

Abstracting is ‘a series of small challenges: no two are alike, yet the writing must be consistent, accurate and finished on time’. With these words of Neufeld and Cornog (1983: 10) we begin this chapter that deals with the practice of abstracting.
