Definitions

Besides the obvious fact that a handbook like this requires all concepts to be defined thoroughly, there is a further reason to do so: the unruly and contradictory nature of terminology in this field. In the field of abstracting there are a number of ill-defined concepts and terms used in a contradictory and inconsistent manner. However, we do not want to spend an unduly long time and waste energy on discussing these terms. Rather we will use our best efforts to employ the terminology consistently, and to apply the terms we regard the most appropriate and which are accepted by the majority of sources.
