Updating Links

Studies of Internet users report that few things irritate visitors more than a site that doesn't keep its hyperlinks up-to-date. When queried, many visitors complain that they're less inclined to revisit a site if they can't be sure its links work and feel that it's a strong indication of sloppy maintenance.

Dead or broken hyperlinks typically occur for one of two reasons:

  • Because a page or site is no longer available—These should be removed.

  • Because the exact URL for the page or site has changed—The hyperlink should be edited to reflect the change.

Such problematic links can be identified by checking the Problems report under Reports view. (Reports were discussed earlier in this chapter.)
