SQL Overview
Just as computer programming languages such as Basic, C, C++, Java, and Pascal go through different versions, so, too, does SQL. The latest version of SQL is known as ANSI-SQL 92. ANSI stands for the American National Standards Institute. The latest standard of the SQL language was codified in 1992. A standard is nothing more than a specification of how something is supposed to work. If the database product you are working with supports the ANSI standard, you can be assured the core parts of the language are supported. This does not mean that a specific database has to support all parts of the standard. Rather, this means the Select statement in Oracle will work the same way as the Select statement works in SQL Server.
