Week 39

Work in an Area of Your Unique Contribution

Introduction

In Week 38 we learned that there are two ways to make the future happen:

(1)    “Anticipation of a future that has already happened.”

(2)    “Imposing on the as yet unborn future a new idea that tries to give direction and shape to what is to come.”

In this week’s passage, Drucker illustrates these two separable but overlapping approaches to making the future happen by differentiating between Bob Buford’s two major social innovations: Leadership Network and Halftime. Bob Buford has been very successful in both approaches. It took a lot of Buford’s time, resources, and talent along with mentoring by Peter Drucker to accomplish his two major achievements.
