During his campaign for the presidency of the United States in 1980, Ronald Reagan made a campaign appearance in front of the Honnold Library of the Claremont Colleges. A two-term governor of California, he was no stranger to Claremont, having visited the colleges in a number of capacities before 1980.
A large number of students gathered at the campaign event, mostly to jeer the Republican nominee. Reagan let them go on for a time and then broke out into a memorable address that stilled the crowd.
