Government Involvement in Airline Operations

Introduction

In this chapter, you will learn how governments oversee the many facets of air transportation. As mentioned in Chapter 1, governments typically must exercise some degree of influence over the business of transportation to ensure the needs of the public are met by (a) guarding against the monopolistic tendencies of the railroads and pipelines, and (b) preventing destructive competition in the airline, trucking, and water carrier industries. The role of government in the airline business will be presented as will the ongoing government involvement in other aspects of the airline industry, namely security, safety, environmental issues, and infrastructure support.
