Juran and Deming, two American statisticians, helped Japanese industry to recover after the war. A fundamental part of their approach was based on the measurement of failures, the diagnosis of the cause of failure, and the implementation of remedies. The repeated application of this technique became the continuous improvement movement and the epidemic of quality that revolutionized Japanese manufacturing.
