man [options] [section] command

man -k keyword

The man utility provides online documentation for GNU/Linux commands. In addition to user commands, documentation is available for many other commands and details that relate to use of GNU/Linux. Because many of the commands are from GNU, the GNU info utility (page 45) frequently provides additional information.

A one-line header is associated with each manual page. This header consists of a command name, the section of the manual in which the command is found, and a brief description of what the command does. These headers are stored in a database so that you can perform quick searches on keywords associated with each man page.
