The cvs (Concurrent Versions System) utility is built on RCS. Like RCS, cvs stores successive revisions of files efficiently. It also ensures that access to files by multiple developers is done in a controlled manner that produces predictable results.

RCS has been extended by cvs in two significant ways that make it attractive for large-project development. One extension shifts the unit of focus from individual files to entire directories of files.
