One of the powerful features of the X Window System is that applications are independent of window managers; a window manager, such as Metacity, is just another application. As a result, you can run any X application with any window manager. An application does not inherit properties from the window manager. For example, the Athena scrollbar used by xterm appears and operates the same way under all window managers; it does not turn into a KDE style scrollbar when you invoke xterm while running KDE.
