This section leads you through a brief session using Red Hat Linux, explaining how to log in, change your password, and log out.

security || Always Use a Password

Unless you are the only user of your system, your system is not connected to any other systems, the Internet, or a modem, and you are the only one with physical access to your system, it is a bad idea to allow any user to log in without a password.

security || Keep Your Password Secure

Enter your password in response to the Password: prompt, and then press RETURN as the user has done in Figure 2-1. For security the characters you enter do not appear on the screen. For more information refer to “passwd: Changes Your Password” on page 40.
