It was 1981 and I had an idea (apparently ahead of my time) of leading wilderness trips while teaching photography in the field. Southwestern Wilderness Travel was born. I remember leading amateur photographers through Paria Canyon’s 36 miles of boulder-strewn wading, quicksand, and brilliant sandstone walls dissecting the Colorado Plateau. It was heaven. Carrying a double pack (a client suffered a leg injury and couldn’t carry the load), or wriggling from my bivi-sack in a rainstorm that had transformed our camp into a muddy pit, seemed wonderful.
