It was 1985 and I needed direction in my life. I was doing some freelance work for news magazines, but Arizona is not New York and both U.S. News &World Report and Time Magazine provided only a sporadic income for assignment work. Arizona Highways Magazine Managing Editor, Wes Holden, assigned a story to me on the Nature Conservancy’s Muleshoe Ranch. Located in the Galiuro Mountains east of Tucson, the ranch was a prime piece of real estate that preserves the unique riparian habitat and features a hot spring. My appointed contact was a silver-haired, incredibly fit woman whose ready smile was deeply etched into her face.
