Ralph “Frosty” Frost was a crusty, energetic Scotsman who directed the photography staff of the Chicago Sun-Times. Under his leadership the nimble, talented staff at the Sun-Times gained more than their share of photographic recognition. In 1965, when I moved from the Tribune to the Sun-Times, Frosty became my first real mentor. He entrusted me with difficult assignments, and his trust pushed me to achieve more than I thought possible in spite of several missteps. Most important, five years later, he assigned me to document the deplorable conditions at the Lincoln and Dixon State Schools for the mentally handicapped.
