Push and Pull Factors

We’re going to break Lily’s story here to return to the important concept of the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ dynamic in choice-making. Lily comments that her Dad ‘didn’t push’ her to go to rugby training, but it appears that he gave her the courage to say ‘yes’ by giving her the time and space to make the choice for herself. Then he ‘got straight up’, making it possible for her to act on her decision before she could change her mind. In what seemed to us a brilliant stroke of parenting he compelled her to take responsibility for what she wanted and then supported her in the decision she made.
