There was no time for Damadian and his team to lounge around and savor their achievement. They were convinced that the crude Indomitable was the first step to a human scanner. But plenty of work stood before them if a true commercial machine was to be developed.

The next challenge was to get the scan time down. There was obviously no value in a scanner that required a patient to remain imprisoned inside it for close to five hours. A key reason it took so long was the horrendous signal-to-noise ratio. In the weeks following the first scan, Goldsmith struggled with the problem.
