HOW MUCH DO YOU ASK OF LIFE?

There’s a poignant scene in the 2007 movie Evening starring several great actresses, including Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep. Redgrave’s character, Ann Lord, is an elderly woman about to die. Her college friend, Lila, has called to say goodbye. Streep plays Lila Ross, a well-to-do woman who settled for an appropriate marriage, while her friend Ann worked to become a singer in New York. Both had loved a young man named Harris, but neither married him. Raising concern that at least one of them should have married him, Ann is assured by Lila that it all worked out as it was supposed to be. The implication is that ultimately there are no mistakes.
