The idea of authentic self-worth clarifies the difference between service and self-importance. The delicate balance between these polarities must be balanced in a way that promotes the individual’s ongoing development toward self-actualization while simultaneously increasing social integration. Being able to enjoy the satisfaction of achieving the goals that we set for ourselves increases our feelings of self-worth, optimism, and happiness, as long as these gains are never made at the expense of others.
