HOW WE DEVELOP OUR SENSE OF SELF-WORTH

Developing our sense of self-worth is also a process that begins very early in life. For several days or even weeks, the life of a newborn is exclusively one of meeting critical biological needs. Gradually over time, as his or her memory of pleasant and unpleasant experiences begins to expand and stabilize, desires to repeat those that are pleasurable and avoid those that are uncomfortable begin to emerge. For the most part, however, newborns want only what they need.
Later in life our desires increasingly diverge from our needs as the sense of individual identity asserts itself. By age two a strong sense of preference is well-established through the body’s identification with the “wanter” and “chooser.” ...
