Non-Ideal Radio Frequency Front-End Models in 60 GHz Systems

As described in Chapter 1, 60 GHz wireless systems are now seeing various kinds of consumer applications from short-range file transfer to indoor Gbps home netwoFFrks.1 One of the key technical challenges for the widespread commercial use of 60 GHz based wireless end-user products is their cost-effective implementation. This has provided the motivation for a great deal of work on silicon-based millimeter-wave technologies capable of providing higher integration and lower power consumption than the III-V compound semiconductor technologies used in 60 GHz bands even a few years ago.

Nevertheless, there is still much to do if we are to make silicon-based 60 GHz front-ends competitive with microwave front-ends below 5 GHz. The challenging 60 GHz radio frequency (RF) front-ends induce several critical RF non-idealities that must be addressed in 60 GHz system design. This problem becomes even more critical in mobile or handheld device related applications in which an aggressive RF circuit design for low power consumption and small form factors is a must.

The aim of this chapter is to address RF non-idealities that should be considered in the 60 GHz system design and to establish their behavioral models, providing simple and efficient methods to predict system performance without computationally complex circuit level simulations.
