What do you do with a customer, client, etc., who wants to talk forever when you have a deadline to meet and really cannot afford to spend time on the phone or in a meeting with them?

How do we handle it? Let’s say you’re on a deadline or in the middle of a very, very important project. Ring, ring. You pick up the phone with your normal nice greeting, “Good morning. Customer Service Department. This is Mary.” And out blasts someone who has absolutely nothing to do today. “Hi, Mary,” they yell happily at you. “Guess who I saw last night at the movie?” With your deadline looming, you really don’t have time to play games now, do you? Or suppose you are finished talking business and the caller now wants to stay on the line and “play.” ...
