A recent study found that illustrated children's books in Asia and the U.S. have dramatically different kinds of facial expression on the characters. The facial expressions on the protagonists in U.S. children's books have wide, direct smiles and eyes that gaze at you. In contrast, the protagonists in Asian books have smiles that don't show a lot of teeth, and eye gaze is not penetratingly direct.
