Working with Layers

Layers for animation are not a standard tool in 3ds Max. There is a Layers functionality in 3ds Max, but this is a CAD-based system that is used primarily to hide and unhide sets of objects. Layers for animation are unique to Character Studio and are not yet available for standard 3ds Max objects.

Essentially, layers let you take an existing animation and then, by creating a new animation layer, add new animation that can be made active or turned off. This gives you the opportunity to try out various ideas. It’s ideal for adding more animation to motion capture files, especially when there are lots and lots of keyframes to contend with.
