Conclusion

The development of technologies linked to 3D video has considerably transformed our relation with images over the last decades. The democratization of augmented reality, for example, now allows the whole cinematography industry to mix real and virtual images, using quality criteria that make it more and more difficult to identify computer-generated items in a natural image. The same applies to 3D television (3DTV); the emergence of 3DTV technologies has brought out a number of changes that are certain to revolutionize the whole image production chain, from capture to diffusion.

In this book, we aimed to cover a broad range of subjects connected with 3D video. In five main parts, we have successively considered issues linked to:

– 3D capture;

– 3D representation, structuring and reconstruction;

– 3D coding and compression;

– 3D rendering and display.

In the final part, we considered a number of applications in relation to healthcare and/or audiovisual production.

As a whole, this book is the result of considerable effort in knowledge accumulation. In publishing this book, the editors and the authors had two aims in terms of 3D video: to provide students with a basis and motivation to successfully tackle this domain, and to allow researchers in the field to reinforce their knowledge and add to their understanding of sectors outside of their respective specialisms, observing trends and discovering new perspectives.
