Generating normal maps with Photoshop

The "correct" way to generate normal maps for a model is to build two versions of the model—a high resolution version and another version that is of a lower resolution (fewer vertices). From there, the modeling tool will generate normal maps that, when applied to the lower resolution model, will approximate the appearance of the higher resolution model. In this way, a similar level of detail can be achieved while the total number of polygons drawn is reduced.
