RIGGING

One of the things that makes Iron Man cool is that as his superhero self, he looks like a robot, but we know that underneath that technology is a human who is responsible for every movement it makes. Though there was a real suit, in the movie most of Iron Man’s action was computer generated. So it wasn’t a human moving it. It was a rig.

There are several kinds of rigs. The most common one is made up of a skeleton of joints, like what was used for Iron Man, or any other object that has poseable limbs. But what about things like facial animation? You can have a rig made up of lattice deformers, or of blend shapes.
