Things are happening so fast. When I was a boy, only a handful of privileged people had phones and cars. The hand-delivered telegram was the quickest way to reach someone. Handwritten letters were treasured and often kept in perpetuity. Business was transacted in the same way. Fifty years ago, we used telexes to communicate between London and New York; the trans-Atlantic phone was too expensive. A few years later, we began to use faxes.
