4.2.1–4.3.3: To send information over a network, a host provides each packet with a source and destination IP address. Routers use IP to determine whether to forward the packet to another network. The standards for IP are in Request for Comments (RFC) 791.
Each host on the Internet must have a unique IP address. Your IP address likely belongs to an ISP. The ISP received the address (or a block of addresses) from an Internet registry and assigned it to you. When your host sends packets, it places the assigned IP address in the packet header as the source address. The IP packet header also includes a destination address.
