While still a journalism student at Kent State University in 1974, J. Ross Baughman (b. 1953) received his first major award in photography, the J. Winton Lemen Photojournalism Scholarship from the National Press Photographers Association. He graduated in 1975 and two years later received a first-place award for Investigative Reporting from the Associated Press Managing Editors (Ohio) for a five-part series, “The Nazis in America.” In 1978, Baughman was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Feature Photography for his portfolio on Zimbabwe’s guerrilla war.
