Now look again at the scenes with the man and his car. At the end of the first shot the car had stopped and the driver’s door opened. There is the sound of a car door opening and closing, hanging in the trims bin, but how do you make it fit the picture?

Marking sync

First wind down the picture and mark the frame where the door opens with a cross. Now, before you do anything else, mark level synchronism on the picture, on the two soundtracks for the first scene and on the spacing all at the same point. You can use a wax pencil to mark one frame of picture and one frame of sound. A cross in a box is the customary sign to mark picture and three parallel lines are normally used on sound.
