Negative Cutting: Optical Effects

 

If your film contains dissolves you will need to overlap your cuts where the dissolves occur. This is not complicated. You still use alternate rolls for alternate shots but you must remember to allow the overlap we discussed earlier.

Overlapping checkerboard dissolves

Using the point at which you have joined the shots to be dissolved in the cutting copy as the centre of the dissolve you can join the first shot on the opposite roll to the shot which preceeds it, and run down to the centre point. Then, wind on, past the centre of the dissolve allowing half the length of the optical effect again: for example, an extra 24 frames beyond the point at which you joined in the cutting copy in the case of a 48 frame ...
