Opportunities to recognize and reward employees occasionally fall into a manager’s lap. For example, an employee wants to talk about something that has made him or her particularly proud. It might be part of a project, but it could just as easily be a piece of art created by the employee’s child or a vacation photograph.

Think back on recent situations in which some of your employees approached you and proudly described an action or item, but your reaction was a little too blasé. Go back to these employees and ask to see the artwork, photograph, or whatever it was that led them to approach you in the first place. Give the item some genuine attention, and the employee some genuine recognition.
