America’s Promise: Equal Rights
Today it seems that many, many people are yelling, shouting, and demanding equal rights. They want to be protected. They want someone to put everybody on a level playing field. It is important to recognize that our ancestors came to America with one important idea in mind: They wanted the equal right to be unequal. They wanted to be judged for their performance and have the opportunity to excel in America. Thus, we have today’s meritocracy—where people are judged by their accomplishments.
Assignment
On a 3 × 5 card, write: “Everyone has the equal right to excel. Those who do will be rewarded.” Consider posting this around the workspace to remind your employees that outcomes count.
