Don’t think you can sample from previous recordings for free

Songwriters who have their own at-home studio or access to studio time may feel free to sample the sounds from previously released records. Sampling is the process of taking the sounds from a record and using them in your song, either in their original form or electronically manipulated into another form. Samples can range from a one-time use of a small piece of an obscure song, to the looping of one bar of a song throughout a new song, to the use of a recognizable riff or hook from a hit song, to a rewrite of the lyric of an original song that is then treated as a parody.
