We are constantly bombarded with words. A steady stream of them washes over our ears from television and radio. Most of us have learned to tune out a great deal of it for the sake of what’s left of our sanity. In this scenario, words are as meaningful as white noise. To illustrate the state of mind of the average listener, Pat sometimes wears a special pair of earrings to songwriting workshops. One earring says “IN”; the other says—you guessed it—“OUT.”
