Can you picture how your body would look without any bones? What if the bones in one arm were a lot longer than those in the other? We take for granted the support and symmetry bones give our bodies because they are on the inside where they can’t be seen, but we need them.

Songs need skeletons, too.

This idea seems to anger some young songwriters when we present it in our workshops. We’ll never forget the young man in Minnesota who came up at the end of the day to argue with us that his favorite bands did not have structure in their songs.
