Make sure each song will motivate an artist to sing its message
One of our favorite possessions is an R. Crumb adult comic book entitled Despair. On the cover, the husband stares out the window and says to the wife, who sits rigidly in a chair staring off in the opposite direction, “See if there’s anything good on …” In the balloon over her head is her reply, “Why bother?”
This scene never fails to amuse us. We’ve been there, in the doldrums of existence, where even television offers no hope. This is real-life pain, the stuff that makes for the best laughs. So even though the punch line is “Why bother?” there’s a very sharp point being made by this image.
