Chapter 34. Julius Shulman (1910–2009)

Julius Shulman spent the early part of his life in New York and Connecticut. He moved with his family to California when he was 10 years old. In high school he took a photography class, which started him out in the field. That was to be the only formal training he received in the craft. Shulman’s photography career took off when he met architect Richard Neutra in 1936. When Shulman took some snapshots of a house Neutra was working on, Neutra liked them and purchased them from Shulman.

Shulman photographed mid-century modern houses by some of the world’s best architects, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, Charles Eames, and, of course, Richard Neutra.
