Chapter 27. Paul Outerbridge (1896–1958)

Paul Outerbridge took his first photograph when he was in the service. In 1922, Outerbridge had his first photograph published in Vogue. After that, he moved to Paris, where he befriended Man Ray and Pablo Picasso.

Outerbridge started out as an illustrator and set designer. He was one of the first to move from black and white to color photography. He staged surreal still lifes and then photographed them, paying meticulous attention to lighting and composition. Outerbridge also photographed nudes. In one such photo—Phoenix Rising—Outerbridge framed a woman lying down with her neck at the bottom of the frame to her breasts one-third of the way up.
