Chapter 26. Marvin Newman (1927– )

Marvin Newman spent his childhood in New York City. During those years, he shared a darkroom with members of the Photo League, the organization started by Berenice Abbott and Paul Strand and whose membership included many of the twentieth-century photography greats. Newman was one of the first photographers to receive a master’s degree in the subject. He first went to school to study sculpture and photography at Brooklyn College. Later, he attended the Institute of Design, where he worked with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskin. After World War II, Newman photographed the streets of Chicago with Yasuhiro Ishimoto.
