Chapter 23. Lisette Model (1901–1983)

Model came from wealth, and like many photographers of her era, she studied painting before becoming interested in photography. Her subjects often knew she was taking their picture and didn’t necessarily want to have her do so, making them appear resistant in the image. Model once said, “We photograph not only what we know, but also what we don’t know.” She also said, “Never take a picture you are not passionately interested in.”
