Chapter 22. Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925–1972)

Ralph Eugene Meatyard was a devoted family man whose artistic creations represent an odd portrayal of family connections. As an optician, he worked for an optical company that also sold photography equipment, which he eventually used for his own photography. After he opened his own practice, Meatyard displayed his photographs in the waiting room of his office. He photographed family members in his neighborhood, often in abandoned buildings and much of the time wearing masks. His mask photographs are among his best known. He died at age 46.
