Chapter 15. Lewis Hine (1874–1940)

Aschool administrator gave Lewis Hine his first camera while he was a teacher in New York. One of his first experiences with the camera was photographing immigrants who came to Ellis Island, in an effort to present them in a more positive light to overcome the anti-immigrant fervor that had swept the country.

In 1908, the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) hired Hine to investigate and photograph child labor practices in the United States. He photographed children wherever they worked. His work made people aware of abuses that took place in the workplace and helped to strengthen child labor laws.
