One way to think about performance management is to compare it to improving our health.

Some individuals take care of their health needs by playing team sports. Even though they are in terrible physical shape as a result of poor diet and poor exercise habits, they join a soccer, softball, or basketball team in the hope that they will be able to shock their systems back into shape. This is, all too often, the way managers approach the appraisal process: They shock themselves into creating appraisals by locking themselves in their offices a few days before appraisals are due and cranking them out.
