During the Appraisal

One of the most difficult tasks for any supervisor is the performance appraisal itself. There are many reasons why supervisors dislike appraisals:

•   It’s difficult to give bad news.

•   It’s difficult to give good news.

•   The supervisor is not comfortable with confrontation—especially if the employee is surprised.

•   The employee might not like what she or he hears.

•   The employee, if receiving positive feedback, might expect significant financial rewards or promotions that are not presently available.

All of these concerns and issues can be overcome if the supervisor plans and manages the appraisal meeting.
